The Axkid One is the ONLY i-Size approved rear facing ISOfix car seat in the world that can be used from 61cm until 125cm/23kg. This means that your child can be rearfacing for around 2 years longer than other isofix car seats on the market.  It can only be installed with ISOfix.

It has been Swedish Plus tested, as well as ADAC tested, and deemed the best of the best in terms of extended rearfacing car seats. It is also ideal for taller/bigger than average children who need to remain harnessed for longer.

Axkid is a Swedish manufacturer, founded in Gothenburg in 2009. They offer products that provide maximum safety and always recommend rear-facing travel for as long as possible because it is proven to be 5 times safer than forward facing.

Pros and cons of the axkid one:

Pros

  • It gets excellent safety ratings by ADAC and it passes the stringent Swedish Plus Test
  • It has one of the highest height limits of 125cm for rear facing
  • It is the easiest extended rear facing car seat to install due to ISOfix installation
  • It can be installed in less than a minute
  • The installation is Fool-proof as each step is numbered on the various parts of the car seat
  • The seat slides forwards/backwards on sliding rails giving your child more (or less) legroom.
  • It is very easy to recline with a twisting knob and indicators showing the ideal recline position for your child’s age
  • It is light in weight for easy maneuverability

Cons

  • It is very expensive
  • It cannot be used in vehicles that do not have ISOfix anchors
  • The harness is slightly stiff to tighten

WHAT ARE THE WEIGHT AND HEIGHT LIMITS OF THE AXKID one?

The Axkid One is a rear facing only seat. It is approved from 61cm to 23kg/125cm. It has a long backrest, allowing children to rear face up to the age of approximately 6 years.

The Axkid One, along with Axkid's other extended rearfacing Axkid car seats,  has one of the highest height limits of all other brands of extended rear facing car seats, so will last tall children the longest. The Axkid One cannot be used forward facing.

Rear facing is safest for children under 4 years old or even longer.

WHAT ARE THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE AXKID One?

The Axkid One is i-Size approved. It is rear facing only, which is proven to be 5 times safer than forward facing. The Axkid One is the only 23kg extended rearfacing ISOfix car seat to be tested and approved by the most stringent crash testing in the world; The Swedish Plus. This is made possible by the fact that the Axkid ONE weighs 30% less than other extended rearfacing car seats.

The Axkid One was also tested by ADAC and received a score of 1.6 for safety which is considered “good”. The results displayed a low risk of injury in a frontal collision and a very low risk of injury in a side collision.

Axkid ONE is now proclaimed as the best extended rear-facing car seat ever tested in ADAC.

Inspired by aircraft engineering, The Axkid One has a protective aluminium frame that maintains the structure of the car seat while the high strength steel bars act like a protective cocoon made to withstand and direct the forces of an impact away from the child’s body in the event of an accident. The whole seat is built from shock-absorbing materials.

Additionally, the removeable innovative Axkid Side Impact Protection (ASIP) is developed with the most prestigious crash institute in the world; ADAC in Germany. Upon a side collision, ASIP is built to deform and absorb the impact before it reaches your child.

WHAT ARE THE COMFORT FEATURES OF THE AXKID one?

With one hand, the Axkid One can easily slide forwards/backwards on its sliding rails giving your child more legroom or less legroom if you need to make more space for the front passenger. It offers ample legroom for taller children. Even when in the most compact position, children are perfectly comfortable crossing their legs or resting them against the backrest.

The Axkid One can be reclined by simply turning the reclining knob on the seat. The reclining function on the Axkid One is “step-less” which means that there are no set recline angles like other car seats. This allows you to recline the seat in a smooth motion to the perfect angle for your child and your vehicle. There is a recline indicator on the side to show you what the correct recline would be for your child’s age and height. This ensures your child is always comfortable AND safe while travelling.

The headrest and internal harness has 12 height adjustable positions which can be easily adjusted from the back of the seat to ensure the safest harness fit over your baby all the way up to your 125cm child. The head rest has memory foam built into the sides for comfort and safety.

The Axkid One has aluminium bars on either side of the chair that perform as side impact protection but they can also be used as handle bars for your older child to use to pull themselves up and into the seat without your assistance.

What is the difference between the axkid one+ and the axkid one?

The Axkid One+ was designed to fit from birth (a minimum height of 40cm). It comes with extra supportive newborn padding and inserts and it has been designed to recline adequately for newborns to prevent positional asphyxiation.

The Axkid One does not comes with the extra supportive newborn padding and inserts which only  makes it suitable for babies who are over 61cm in height.

However, despite those differences, the Axkid One+ and Axkid One have the exact same shell and overall design. They both have a height limit of 125cm and a weight limit of 23kg. They have both been Swedish Plus Tested as well as tested by ADAC. They both received excellent safety ratings.

HOW IS THE AXKID one INSTALLED?

The Axkid One must be installed with ISOfix only. It cannot be installed with a seat belt. It does not have lower tether straps, which all other 25kg rear facing car seats require.

The Axkid One is quick and easy to install due to the numbered installation step stickers and is much less of a hassle to install than the other extended rear facing belted car seats. Once it is installed properly, it is very secure thanks to the load leg and self-adjusting rebound bar.

See the short video below on how to install the Axkid One:

HOW TO REMOVE AND WASH THE AXKID one COVERS:

  • Always refer to your manual before washing your car seat.
  • To remove the fabric cover from the seat, pull outwards on the side cover and de-attach the Velcro.
  • Open the zippers at the backrest and gently remove the cover from the seat.
  • Make note how it is attached around the seat to make it easier to put back.
  • When reinstalling the side cover, insert it under the aluminum frame and simply push back into the snap attachment.
  • To remove the headrest cover, open the zippers on the bottom of the headrest and gently remove the cover
  • The covers can be machine washed on a 30 degree delicate cycle
  • Do not tumble dry. Air dry out of direct sunlight

HOW LONG CAN AXkid CAR SEATS BE USED FOR?

Axkid recommends that their harnessed car seats have a life span of 8 years from the date of manufacture. The reason all car seats have a maximum recommended lifespan is because the plastic parts are more sensitive to differences in temperatures when installed in the car, but also because Axkid are continuously working with the development of their products.

All Axkid seats must be replaced if they are in an accident.

WHAT IS THE WARRANTY ON THE AXKID one?

Axkid offer a 24 month warranty from date of purchase, on manufacturing defects.  The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, damage due to incorrect use, neglect or accident.  Please note that spare parts and repairs are not readily available or accessible in South Africa. We have found that repairs are not carried out, and spare parts take excessively long to be brought into the country.

IS THE AXKID one COMPATIBLE WITH MY CAR?

The Axkid One requires ISOfix anchors for installation.

A rear facing car seat must never be installed in front of an active airbag. The load leg must not be installed over an underfloor storage compartment:

Height: 76 cm

Depth: 54 cm

Weight: 10kg

OUR VERDICT

The Axkid One is a high scoring, long- lasting and convenient car seat. It is in a league of its own with its unique ISOfix capabilities and high weight/height limit. It is ideal for bigger than average children, especially tall children, who are likely to outgrow other toddler seats (18kg/105cm) before they are old enough to move to a booster.

It gets excellent safety ratings and is much easier to install than the other 25kg rear facing belted car seats. If you opt for an extended rearfacing seat (up to 125cm) and need to move it between cars often, the Axkid One is the quickest and easiest to move.

Our only complaint with the Axkid One is the hefty price tag and the stiffness of the harness which makes it slightly more difficult to tighten (new models do not have this issue). However, if you can afford it, it is a great, safe, long-lasting option for your child.
